Looking back to 1993, the Indian government took a significant step towards protecting human rights by enacting the Protection of Human Rights Act (PHRA), which paved the way for the establishment of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). This act also granted states the authority to set up their own National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs).
