BIMSTEC is considering incorporating associate members to enhance cooperation in various sectors such as trade and investment, technology, energy, transportation, tourism, and more. This expansion beyond the Bay of Bengal is seen as a positive move, however, it should be done with careful planning. By focusing on already identified sectors, the inclusion of associate members is believed to be non-controversial and beneficial for the organization. The sectors include cultural cooperation, environmental management, public health, poverty alleviation, counter-terrorism, climate change, and more.
