Meta announced on Friday that it had detected possible hacking attempts on the WhatsApp accounts of US officials from both the Biden and Trump administrations. The company, which owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, identified the hacking activity as a “small cluster of likely social engineering activity” involving accounts pretending to be technical support for AOL, Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft. Although Meta blocked these suspicious accounts, no evidence suggested that the targeted WhatsApp accounts were compromised.
