Scandal rocked the Canadian women’s soccer team as an assistant coach and an analyst were sent home from the Olympics for spying. The analyst, Joey Lombardi, was given a suspended prison sentence for flying a drone over a New Zealand training session. Head coach Bev Priestman also announced she would not participate in the team’s opening game of the gold medal defense.
French authorities detained a staff member for attempting to spy on New Zealand’s tactics using a drone, leading to a complaint from New Zealand and an investigation by the IOC integrity unit. The Canadian Olympic Committee assured cooperation and transparency, considering further actions if necessary.
Priestman expressed regret and apologized to New Zealand Football and Team Canada, stating the incident does not reflect the team’s values. In a show of integrity, Priestman voluntarily withdrew from coaching the upcoming game against New Zealand.
As the team faces repercussions, the focus remains on maintaining integrity and fair play in the Olympic spirit.
