Over 100,000 packets of sliced bread were recalled in Japan after black rat remains were found inside two packets. Pasco Shikishima, the manufacturer, is investigating the incident.
Despite Japan’s reputation for high sanitation standards, no illnesses have been reported from consuming the affected sliced bread.
Pasco Shikishima has apologized for the inconvenience and suspended operations at the Tokyo factory for further investigation.
Food recalls are uncommon in Japan, but past incidents include a cockroach found in a rice ball at 7-Eleven and a health scare involving dietary supplements from Kobayashi Pharmaceutical.
