Electricity Prices Set to Increase Again
The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has requested a hike of Rs 2.63 per unit in electricity prices, adding to the burden on power consumers. Initially seeking an increase of Rs 2.10 per unit, the CPPA filed a revised request for the monthly fuel adjustment for June.
In June, a mix of sources generated electricity, with percentages as follows: 35.13% from hydropower, 11.06% from local coal, 1.95% from furnace oil, 8.66% from local gas, 18.10% from imported LNG, and 14.85% from nuclear fuel. The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) is set to hear the tariff request on July 31.
Previously, NEPRA approved an increase in the basic electricity tariff by up to Rs 7.12 per unit, with exemptions for households and consumers using up to 200 units monthly. Despite protests over rising electricity prices, a tragic incident in Gujranwala highlights the tension, as a man killed his brother in a dispute over an inflated bill.
