A man accused of attempting to kill author Salman Rushdie has been charged with terrorism for acting on behalf of Hezbollah, supporting a designated terrorist organization. Hadi Matar, who already faced charges for a 2022 stabbing attack on Rushdie, was indicted on three counts, including attempting to provide support to Hezbollah, aligning with Iran. Rushdie, now 77, lost eye sight in one eye after the attack by Matar. The indictment claims Matar sought to provide material support to Hezbollah between 2020 and 2022, in an act of terrorism transcending national boundaries. Rushdie, who lived in seclusion after a fatwa in 1989, was attacked at an arts gathering, sustaining multiple stab wounds. He has since released a memoir detailing the incident, emphasizing the surgeon’s remark about his fortuitous survival.
