A recent video circulating on social media purporting to show a man threatening attacks at the Paris Olympics as a Hamas fighter has been identified as originating from a Russian-linked disinformation network, according to Microsoft experts. The video, posted by an account named ‘Hamas Fighter’, shows a man in combat attire making ominous statements towards France and French President Macron. The account was swiftly suspended after the video gained widespread attention.
The man in the video warns of bloodshed in Paris, attributing it to French support of Israel’s actions in Gaza. However, Hamas officials have denied any connection to the video. Microsoft researchers believe the video is linked to a group called Storm-1516, associated with Russia’s Internet Research Agency troll farm.
This suspicious video, shared by pro-Russian accounts, highlights the ongoing disinformation campaigns surrounding the Paris Olympics. Analyzing the video, Arabic speakers on social media noted inconsistencies in the man’s speech, suggesting it was not a native speaker. The video’s deviation from Hamas’ usual practices further casts doubt on its authenticity.
