Japan has been actively seeking the extradition of anti-whaling activist Paul Watson, who was recently arrested in Greenland. The 73-year-old founder of Sea Shepherd is facing possible extradition to Japan, where he is wanted on charges related to a 2010 incident involving a Japanese whaling ship in the Antarctic Ocean.
French President Emmanuel Macron’s office and celebrities like Brigitte Bardot have joined the calls to prevent Mr. Watson’s extradition. An online petition in France has gathered nearly half a million signatures in support of his release.
Despite previous reports that the Interpol red notice against Mr. Watson had been withdrawn, he remains in custody in Greenland, with a decision on extradition pending until August 15. The incident sheds light on Japan’s controversial whaling practices, which have now been limited to its territorial waters and exclusive economic zone.
