Israel Knesset proposes declaring UNRWA a terrorist organization and outlawing its activities in Israel, accusing it of aiding Hamas. MK Yulia Malinovsky calls UNRWA a “fifth column” and the bills pass the first reading in a 50-10 vote.
UNRWA, established in 1949, provides essential services to Palestinian refugees in Gaza, West Bank, and neighboring countries, with over two million people dependent on its aid. Israel claims UNRWA staff were complicit in Hamas attacks, leading to donor nations, including the US, UK, and Germany, withdrawing funding. However, an independent review found no evidence to support these claims.
Israel’s response to the alleged UNRWA involvement in attacks led to air and artillery strikes in Gaza, resulting in casualties. More than 39,000 Palestinians have been killed and almost 90,000 injured in the conflict.
