Kamala Harris’ entry into the presidential race sparked a fundraising frenzy among Democrats, with a record-breaking $64 million raised in just 12 hours after Joe Biden’s endorsement. The total donations could reach up to $90 million within 24 hours, surpassing Donald Trump’s $53 million Republican record set earlier this year.
With concerns over the president’s health impacting donations, Biden’s decision to support Harris appears to have energized grassroots donors. ActBlue, a Democratic PAC, reported hitting a milestone of $14 billion raised since its inception 20 years ago.
The surge in donations continued to climb, with real-time contributions on ActBlue’s website reaching over $64 million by Monday morning. Democratic strategist Kenneth Pennington hailed it as potentially the greatest fundraising moment for the party.
Harris’ campaign spokesperson noted a significant increase in grassroots donations since Biden’s endorsement. The momentum has also led to other fundraising initiatives, like the $1.5 million raised by Win With Black Women in a Zoom meeting.
The 2024 campaign has been renamed “Harris for President,” and Biden’s remaining funds will now support his vice president’s campaign. Harris is now looking to solidify support from major Democratic donors after the overwhelming grassroots response.
