A new initiative to establish a world-class mountaineering school in Gilgit-Baltistan has been announced by Romina Khurshid Alam, the coordinator to the prime minister on climate change. The school aims to promote sustainable and environment-friendly climbing in the northern regions of Pakistan.
The institution will offer structured training in mountaineering, Sherpa training, and sustainable tourism practices. The goal is to equip aspiring mountaineers with the skills and knowledge necessary to enjoy mountains while respecting the local environment and culture.
This project, in coordination with the Gilgit-Baltistan government, is set to establish the first government-run mountaineering school in Skardu. By providing skill development training and facilities, the region’s potential for promoting mountaineering and climbing can be realized.
The initiative not only aims to create new employment opportunities for local communities but also nurture a new generation of mountaineers and tourism professionals dedicated to preserving the natural and cultural integrity of Gilgit-Baltistan. The meeting discussed curriculum, rescue training, site identification, and potential funding opportunities for the school’s establishment.
