Recently, a meeting in Bnei Brak between Major General David Zini, Brigadier General Shay Taib, and Rabbi David Leibel discussed the establishment of a haredi Brigade in the IDF. However, behind the chaos and protests, another scheme was brewing. The IDF’s recruitment of Haredim is not genuine, but rather superficial.
An agreement was reached to recruit 1,800 haredim who are not actively engaged in Torah study. Draft orders will target married men not in full-time yeshiva, those working with smartphones, and haredim with truck driver’s licenses. This agreement ensures that no yeshiva student will be recruited and none of the recruits will join combat units.
This loophole in recruitment will likely lead to an influx of young haredi men returning to yeshivas, avoiding IDF service. However, this practice contradicts a Supreme Court ruling on haredi draft. Questions arise about the equality and fairness of the recruitment process.
Leadership in the IDF has a historic opportunity to address this issue and implement a recruitment process that is equitable and just for all.
