Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is gaining attention for his close ties with former US President Donald Trump, especially after their recent meeting at Mar-a-Lago. The two leaders discussed the war in Ukraine, with Orbán calling Trump a “man of peace.” This meeting capped off Orbán’s “peace missions” around the world.
However, Orbán’s talks with Russian President Putin have sparked controversy among EU leaders, who see it as a betrayal of EU values and support for Ukraine. The EU has even decided to limit its representation during Hungary’s presidency.
Orbán’s alignment with Trump and their shared conservative ideologies, including opposition to immigration and support for nationalism, has raised concerns among centrist EU leaders. Orbán’s “illiberal democracy” approach in Hungary mirrors some of the sentiments expressed at the recent Republican National Convention.
While Orbán aims to show Hungary’s sovereignty and international involvement, his actions have also alienated some EU members and drawn criticism from Ukrainian President Zelensky. The potential re-election of Trump could further solidify Orbán’s position as a key ally in Europe.
However, Orbán’s economic ties with China could pose a challenge in his alliance with Trump, given the latter’s strong stance on protectionism. It remains to be seen how Orbán’s diplomacy and relationships will play out during Hungary’s EU presidency.
