President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has introduced a motion to the Turkish parliament seeking authorization for the deployment of Turkish troops to Somalia’s territorial waters. This motion comes after a defense and economic cooperation deal between Turkey and Somalia was signed in February to enhance Somalia’s maritime defense capabilities and establish a navy.
The move is a response to Ethiopia’s agreement with Somaliland in January, which allowed Addis Ababa to build a military port. Turkey hosted mediation talks between Somalia and Ethiopia earlier this month, aiming to resolve the crisis.
Recently, Turkey signed a hydrocarbon exploration agreement with Somalia, enabling Turkish state company TPAO to explore in Somali maritime areas. Observers suggest that Turkish troops may protect TPAO ships during drilling operations.
The motion grants Erdogan the authority to deploy troops for two years, subject to renewal, to assist Somalia against various threats including terrorism and piracy. The agreement aims to boost Somalia’s maritime capabilities and integrate marine resources into the economy.
“Turkey’s support will include assistance against terrorism, piracy, illegal fishing, smuggling, and other threats,” the motion states.
