The House of Representatives Committee on Defence is set to meet with top military officials to discuss President Bola Tinubu’s directive for the military to cultivate their land as a means to address food insecurity in the country. Chairman of the Committee, Babajimi Benson, emphasized the importance of food security in reducing insecurity and highlighted the role of the armed forces in securing vast lands.
Benson also praised Tinubu for advocating for local government autonomy, stating that it will enhance security at the grassroots level. He stressed the significance of empowering local governments with financial autonomy to spur development and eliminate ungoverned spaces that contribute to insecurity.
Furthermore, Benson advocated for optional state policing, suggesting a thorough vetting process for governors who apply for it. He believes that granting state policing licenses on a pilot scheme basis can be a game changer in Nigeria’s development.
Overall, the meeting aims to discuss strategies for implementing the President’s directives and enhancing security and development initiatives at both the local and national levels.
