Joe Biden to Speak with Israeli Prime Minister about Impending Rafah Invasion
President Joe Biden is set to have a crucial conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tonight regarding the looming Israeli invasion of the southern city of Rafah in the Gaza Strip.
The Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) have already begun evacuating parts of Rafah, home to over a million displaced Palestinians, in preparation for their offensive, as confirmed by the White House.
“We have expressed our firm opposition to a major ground invasion of Rafah to the Israeli government, and the president will address this issue directly with the prime minister today,” stated a spokesperson for the National Security Council to Agence France-Presse (AFP).
International Reactions and Calls for Ceasefire
In response to the escalating situation, Egypt has elevated its military readiness in north Sinai, anticipating the offensive on Rafah, according to sources cited by Reuters.
Meanwhile, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borell, has condemned Israel’s evacuation orders for Rafah and called on them to halt their planned ground invasion in compliance with United Nations Security Council Resolution No. 2728.
Resolution 2728, adopted on March 25, 2024, urges an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip to establish a lasting peace. Despite overwhelming support from 14 members, the United States chose to abstain from voting.
Global Concern and Calls for Action
Expressing concern over the situation, Borell labeled Israel’s evacuation orders as a precursor to further conflict and suffering in the region. He emphasized the urgency of the situation and urged for international intervention to prevent a humanitarian disaster.
