Oman’s official news agency announced that Al Hassan has been appointed by Guterres as the head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) with the Security Council’s approval. Al Hassan, Oman’s former permanent representative to the UN, is the first Arab diplomat to hold this position, succeeding Jenin Henis Plaskhart in Baghdad since November 2018.
Previously leading the UN’s special committee for political affairs and decolonization, Al Hassan’s appointment was welcomed by the Iraqi government as he aims to promote accountability for human rights violations and safeguard human rights in Iraq, supporting the country’s political and economic transformation.
With his experience in the UN’s counterterrorism strategy, Al Hassan’s new role signifies a positive step towards international cooperation for Iraq, paving the way for enhanced relations with the global community.
Let’s look forward to a new chapter in Iraq’s development, guided by Al Hassan’s leadership at UNAMI.
