Kagame Seeks Fourth Term in Rwandan Presidential Election
Millions of Rwandans are heading to the polls Monday to choose their next president and members of parliament. The election pits incumbent Paul Kagame of the ruling Rwandan Patriotic Front against opposition candidates Frank Habineza and Philippe Mpayimana.
More than 500 candidates are vying for 80 seats in the Chamber of Deputies. Polling stations opened early for over 9 million eligible voters, with a large number of polling officials deployed to ensure a smooth voting process.
International observers from organizations such as the African Union, the European Union, and the East African Community are monitoring the elections. Political commentators predict Kagame’s victory based on his widespread support and track record of promoting peace and unity in the country.
The election, spread over three days, will see the diaspora casting their votes on Sunday. The final results are expected by the end of July, with Kagame seeking reelection after a constitutional amendment allowed him to run for a third term in 2017.
