Japan’s defence ministry expressed “grave concern” over joint military activities by China and Russia near Japan, while highlighting the increased threat posed by North Korea in its annual white paper released on Friday. The paper also emphasized the growing tensions around Taiwan and the escalating rivalry between China and the United States.
The ministry pointed out that repeated joint sorties by Chinese and Russian ships around Japan are seen as a demonstration of force against Japan, posing a significant national security threat. North Korea’s missile tests towards Japan have also intensified, presenting a more urgent threat than ever.
Japan’s defence paper underscored the need to enhance regional defense capabilities against rising Chinese military strength and North Korea’s nuclear threat. Japan aims to double its defense spending by 2027, aligning with NATO standards.
The paper highlighted China’s military ambitions as a major strategic challenge and noted increased military activities around Taiwan. Japan is strengthening defense ties with like-minded countries and recently signed a vital defense pact with the Philippines.
While Japan’s defense paper raised concerns, China expressed strong opposition, calling the claims in the white paper interference in its internal affairs and exaggeration of regional tensions.
Despite the escalating tensions, Japan aims to navigate the challenging geopolitical landscape in the Asia-Pacific region through enhanced defense cooperation with allies and like-minded partners.
