Commemorating the Srebrenica genocide of Bosniak Muslims that occurred 29 years ago in 1995, both the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Marija Pejcinovic Buric, secretary-general of the Council of Europe, emphasized the importance of remembering and learning from this tragic event.
Guterres urged for a world free from genocide, promoting justice and peace, while Buric emphasized the need to acknowledge the facts, embrace diversity, and stand against intolerance and discrimination.
Each year on July 11, newly identified victims of the genocide are laid to rest in a memorial cemetery in Potocari. The UN General Assembly has also designated July 11 as Srebrenica Genocide Remembrance Day, calling for international reflection and commemoration of the tragic event.
The Srebrenica genocide, where thousands of innocent men and boys were murdered based on their ethnicity and religion, serves as a reminder of the horrors of war and the importance of promoting human rights and peace.
This year, as we honor the victims of Srebrenica, let us also confront ongoing genocides in other parts of the world, standing against hatred and violence to create a better future.
