Ukraine’s NATO Membership Path ‘Irreversible,’ China Urged to End Support for Russia
The highly-anticipated NATO communique declared Ukraine’s path to joining the transatlantic alliance as “irreversible” and called on China to cease its assistance for Russia’s war on Ukraine. NATO allies are providing assurances to Ukraine for eventual membership, acknowledging the progress Kyiv has made in democratic reforms. The statement emphasized Ukraine’s future in NATO and pledged continued support for its integration.
The communique highlighted Russia as the main security threat and condemned its actions in Ukraine. NATO allies committed to providing Ukraine with over $43 billion in funding for security assistance. The alliance pointed to Iran and North Korea for supporting Russia’s war effort, but particularly called out China for enabling the conflict through its partnership with Russia.
The next NATO summit will take place in The Hague in June 2025, followed by a meeting in Türkiye. The stance towards Ukraine’s NATO membership and the call for China to stop supporting Russia’s war effort are crucial steps in maintaining peace and security in the Euro-Atlantic region.
