Unions representing workers at Paris’ airports have called for a strike just days before the Paris Olympics due to a disagreement over staff bonuses. The CGT, CFDT, FO, and UNSA unions have demanded that all staff receive an Olympics bonus, criticizing the chief executive’s decision to only pay a bonus to select personnel.
The strike at state-controlled Groupe ADP, which manages Paris’ main airports, Charles de Gaulle and Orly, is scheduled for July 17, just nine days before the start of the Paris Games. The potential disruption could affect up to 350,000 daily visitors, athletes, and their equipment.
Amid calls for company-wide bonuses, the ADP unions also seek a “massive” recruitment of 1,000 extra staff and guarantees for holiday time during the Olympics. The Paris Games organizers have expressed concern about potential strikes disrupting the event but have called for a truce to ensure a smooth competition.
The current CEO of ADP is expected to step down after the Olympics, adding another layer of uncertainty to the situation. The threat of strikes leading to disruptions during major sporting events is not new in France, with various sectors making pay demands.
