A man in north-east Melbourne has been charged for stealing a 1.5-metre tall gorilla statue named Garry from a retirement village. The statue was found tucked away in a backyard in Reservoir, weeks after it disappeared from St Helena on June 6.
Police revealed that a 33-year-old man from Heidelberg Heights approached them after news of the theft broke. He has been charged with theft, handling stolen goods, and driving whilst disqualified.
The man was found bailed and is set to appear in court on August 30. Police also discovered 24 stolen driver’s licenses and prescription medication during the investigation at the home in Reservoir.
Investigations are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers. Garry will be returned to its rightful home in St Helena.
