China to Locate Missing Nationals After DR Congo Gold Mine Attack
China is working with the DR Congo government to locate “missing Chinese nationals” after an attack at a gold mine left at least nine people dead. The armed attack on a private Chinese company in the Djugu area was allegedly carried out by rebels from the Cooperative for the Development of Congo (CODECO) militia group. Six Chinese nationals and three Congolese soldiers were killed in the attack.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning stated that China strongly condemns the attack and is in close contact with DR Congo to bring the perpetrators to justice. The region has long suffered from a poor security situation, leading Beijing to remind Chinese nationals to follow security alerts and avoid high-risk areas.
Attacks on mining areas in DR Congo are unfortunately not uncommon, with kidnappers targeting relief convoys and demanding ransom. It is crucial for all nationals to prioritize safety and security in such volatile regions.
