Bengaluru has introduced a new ride-hailing service called ‘Nagara Metered Auto’ in an attempt to bring back the meter culture in the city. Launched in June and backed by Karnataka Rajya Chalakara Parishath, this service operates through a website and a WhatsApp chatbot, distinguishing itself from other ride-aggregators. The aim is to prevent drivers from being cheated and offer passengers government-fixed fares of Rs 30 for the first 2 km and Rs 15 for every additional kilometer.
However, despite over 1,500 drivers registering on the app, Metrolife’s attempts to hail a ride were unsuccessful. The service is still finding its footing in the Central Business District, with many drivers unaware of its existence. Some drivers are hesitant to download the app, fearing increased commissions.
While the option of street-hailing is available through WhatsApp, there is skepticism among auto drivers and passengers about the necessity of another ride-hailing app in an already saturated market. Time will tell if Nagara Metered Auto can overcome these challenges and establish itself as a reliable transport option in Bengaluru.
