President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has recently ordered the reinstatement of the Special Commission on Political Deaths and Disappearances, initially established in 1995. This commission was dismantled at the end of the Jair Bolsonaro administration in late 2022. The main objective of the commission is to recognize political disappearances, search for the remains of the dictatorship’s victims, identify bodies found, and rectify death certificates.
The recreation of this commission was delayed, but the Human Rights Ministry has finally implemented the necessary measures. During the Dilma Rousseff administration, a truth commission revealed that 434 people were killed or disappeared by the military regime, a number considered to be underestimated by Amnesty International.
Jair Bolsonaro’s admiration for the military dictatorship era has been notorious. His administration displayed a strong alliance with individuals associated with the regime. In 2022, his former defense minister even praised the 1964 military coup as a crucial event for Brazil’s political evolution and democracy.
