Hurricane Beryl caused significant devastation in the Caribbean, impacting Jamaica, Barbados, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and heading towards Mexico’s Caribbean coast. The storm, initially a Category 5 hurricane, weakened slightly but was still a major threat. Mexico’s popular Caribbean coast prepared for the storm’s arrival, with shelters set up and coastal communities evacuated.
Despite warnings, tourists in nightlife hotspots like Playa del Carmen and Tulum continued their activities. Beryl’s forecasted path showed it approaching Mexico’s northeast coast, near the Texas border, following its landfall in the Yucatan Peninsula.
The storm’s destructive potential was evident, with reports of fatalities in Grenada, Carriacou, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and northern Venezuela. Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves pledged to rebuild affected areas, highlighting the urgent need for recovery and support in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl’s trail of destruction.
