Sweden has introduced a revolutionary new law that allows grandparents to take paid parental leave while caring for their grandchildren for up to three months during the child’s first year. This move follows Sweden’s groundbreaking decision 50 years ago to offer paid parental leave to fathers as well as mothers.
Under this new law, parents can transfer a portion of their generous parental leave entitlement to the child’s grandparents. A parent couple can transfer up to 45 days, while a single parent can transfer up to 90 days. This initiative is managed by the Social Insurance Agency.
In Sweden, parents are entitled to 480 days of parental benefit per child, with compensation based on their income for 390 days and a fixed amount for the remaining 90 days. Additionally, parents in Sweden can work reduced hours until the child turns 8 years old, and government employees have this option until the child turns 12.
This progressive approach to parental leave demonstrates Sweden’s commitment to supporting families and promoting work-life balance for all parents.
