The family of Perth grandmother Donna Nelson, currently in a Tokyo prison on drug smuggling charges, recently spoke to Foreign Minister Penny Wong. Nelson, who has been in prison for 18 months, had her trial unexpectedly postponed. Despite denying the charges, Nelson continues to await her trial.
Foreign Minister Wong expressed empathy and spent a generous amount of time speaking with Nelson’s family. She also stated that representations are being made to the Japanese government regarding Nelson’s welfare and legal proceedings.
Nelson’s only visitor in prison is her three-year-old granddaughter, which her family mentioned is providing her with some comfort during this difficult time.
