The African Union (AU) has reported that over 65.4 million children in Nigeria and 50 other African countries are currently benefiting from the School Feeding Programme. This initiative was highlighted by Ms. Kefilwe Rhoba Moalosi, the Project Manager for Nutrition and Food Safety at AUDA-NEPAD. She commended Nigeria for its successful implementation of the program, which has seen a significant increase in participation since 2013.
Recognizing the importance of school feeding in enhancing education and nutrition outcomes, the AU has emphasized the need for state-driven implementation and local agricultural support. By prioritizing homegrown school feeding, countries can empower communities, boost economic development, and improve learning environments for children.
With challenges still present in transitioning to Home-Grown School Feeding (HGSF), the AU and AUDA-NEPAD have provided guidelines to support member states in establishing and enhancing their programs. By fostering partnerships, mobilizing resources, and promoting local sustainability, the AU aims to create a holistic approach to school feeding that benefits children, farmers, and communities alike.
Ultimately, investing in school feeding is not just an expense but a strategic investment in the future of Africa. Through collaboration and innovation, African nations can work towards zero hunger and create a brighter tomorrow for generations to come.
