In January 2000, Israel took a firm stance against Austria’s far-right Freedom Party joining the government, leading to the recall of its ambassador. Fast forward to today, Israel’s Diaspora Affairs Minister Amichai Chikli is cozying up to European extreme right-wing leaders, including Marine Le Pen, Viktor Orbán, and others with ties to fascism and antisemitism.
These newfound allies of Minister Chikli are promoting racist views and undermining minority protections in democratic countries. This dangerous alliance mirrors past partnerships with American Evangelicals and Trump supporters, and risks further alienating Israel from the family of democratic nations.
Israel must prioritize a covenant of progress and democracy over ties with hate-filled ideologies. Drawing lessons from history, particularly the opposition to the extreme Right by late foreign minister David Levy, is imperative for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government in 2024.
It’s time for Israel to reclaim its status among democracy advocates worldwide and avoid aligning with those who promote hatred and bigotry. As the saying goes, those who ride with a scorpion will eventually be stung by it.
