TASHKENT, Uzbekistan, June 29. UN Secretary General António Guterres is set to embark on a pivotal visit to Central Asian countries starting on June 29. The purpose of his visit is to engage with leaders and officials, review climate change projects, and interact with local activists.
Guterres will kick off his visit in Uzbekistan before attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Astana on July 4. During the summit, he will stress the importance of upholding multilateralism, peace, and the fight against climate change based on the values enshrined in the UN Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The UN Secretary General will also highlight the need for global unity in addressing common threats, cautioning against letting geopolitical differences hinder collaborative efforts.
This visit marks Guterres’ commitment to fostering partnerships and building bridges in the region, following a previous visit to Central Asian countries in 2017.
