The United States Criticizes India in Religious Freedom Report
The annual report on religious freedom published by the United States has sparked controversy by criticizing close partner India for its increasing anti-conversion laws, hate speech, and demolitions of homes and places of worship for minority faith communities. Secretary of State Antony Blinken highlighted the concerning rise of bigotry worldwide against both Jews and Muslims, and noted a sharp increase in anti-Semitism and Islamophobia in the US in connection to the Gaza war.
Despite efforts by Indian police, the report revealed instances where Christian communities faced disruptions during worship services and attacks by mobs over accusations of conversion activities. The report also called out EU member Hungary for its use of anti-Semitic tropes and anti-Muslim rhetoric.
While the US has sought warmer ties with India as a counterbalance to China, the public criticism in the report may not lead to immediate action. Nevertheless, the report serves as a reminder of the importance of religious freedom and tolerance in a global context.
