The Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee (FADC) is set to discuss the IDF’s manpower needs in a classified meeting on Monday, as part of the new law regulating ultra-Orthodox (haredi) service in the IDF. The session will be attended by Maj.-Gen. Yaniv Asor, head of the IDF’s Personnel Directorate, following three initial sessions starting on June 18.
Simultaneously, ongoing discussions between the prime minister’s office and haredi party leaders could result in a compromise bill later presented to the FADC for further evaluation.
The High Court ruling
Against the backdrop of a recent High Court ruling deeming the haredi exemption illegal, potential consequences include revoked social benefits for non-compliant haredi men. This ruling has sparked criticism from haredi politicians, leading to concerns about a rift between the haredi community and the general public.
Shas chairman MK Aryeh Deri met with Rabbi Moshe Maya to discuss the impact of the ruling on yeshivas and educational systems. The ruling has stirred opposition within the haredi community, with publications denouncing its effects on haredi society.
