OAS General Assembly opens with focus on Bolivian crisis
Paraguayan President Santiago Peña emphasized the importance of democracy in combating transnational crime, drug trafficking, and terrorism as he inaugurated the Organization of American States (OAS) 54th General Assembly in Asunción. Peña highlighted the significance of peace and security, stating that democracy is the key to addressing security challenges posed by organized crime.
Peña stressed, “We respond to evil with good, violence must be countered with democratic institutionality. Strengthened democracy is the only possible response.” OAS Secretary-General Luis Almagro condemned the actions of the Bolivian Army and expressed solidarity with President Luis Arce, affirming the OAS’s commitment to upholding constitutional order.
The General Assembly, attended by member countries, observers, and civil society organizations, is set to address critical issues over the next two days at the Conmebol headquarters in Luque.
