The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has decided to delay the discussion on the new national minimum wage report from the Tripartite Committee. This delay is to allow for further consultations with President Bola Tinubu, state governors, local government authorities, and the private sector.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated that the Federal Government needs to engage with all relevant stakeholders before drafting an executive bill for the National Assembly. The Tripartite Committee proposed an increase in the minimum wage to N62,000, but the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress are demanding N250,000.
President Tinubu is expected to consult widely to reach an informed decision before presenting the new minimum wage proposal to the National Assembly. This decision follows expressions of disappointment from NLC President Joe Ajaero, who noted the lack of communication from the President towards harmonizing proposed figures.
