Recently, a former sex crimes detective was sentenced to five months in jail for engaging in misconduct with a vulnerable victim. The detective, John Melhuish, took advantage of his position to have a sexual relationship with a woman who was a victim of abuse by her former partner.
Melhuish, who was a member of Victoria Police for 20 years, met the woman while investigating her ex-partner’s abusive behavior. He later initiated a sexual relationship with her, leading to his suspension in 2020.
Despite losing his career and family, Melhuish was sentenced to community work post-release. The judge emphasized how his actions compromised the integrity of the criminal proceedings and exploited the victim’s vulnerability.
