Kenya President Ready for Dialogue with Protesters
Protests against Kenya’s proposed high taxes continue to grip the country as President William Ruto expresses readiness to engage in dialogue with demonstrators led by a youth group. The youth have been vocal in their opposition to the Finance Bill 2024, citing concerns over proposed tax hikes that disproportionately affect the younger population.
The protests have been primarily driven by Generation Z members, who have taken to the digital platforms and streets to voice their grievances. Despite arrests of youth leaders and reports of casualties during protests, the demonstrations have remained largely peaceful.
The President commended the youth for engaging in the affairs of the country and expressed willingness to address their concerns through dialogue. However, some Generation Z members have declined the offer of negotiations, fearing repercussions.
As the Finance Bill 2024 moves to the committee stage for amendments, the youth have vowed to continue their protests outside parliament, demanding the withdrawal of the controversial bill.
