Ottawa has officially added Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to its list of terrorist organizations, urging Canadian nationals in Iran to leave the country. Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc announced the decision during a news conference, marking a significant step in Canada’s fight against terrorism.
Despite opposition demands, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government had previously hesitated to list the IRGC, citing potential unintended consequences. However, Ottawa’s recent move demonstrates a firm stance against the powerful faction, known for its global terrorist activities.
By listing the IRGC as a terrorist entity, Canadian authorities can now take legal action against anyone supporting the group financially or materially. The decision also includes banning top IRGC leaders from entering the country and imposing targeted sanctions.
The IRGC, which controls a vast business empire and elite armed forces in Iran, has consistently denied allegations of engaging in terrorist activities. Nevertheless, Ottawa’s bold move signifies a pivotal moment in Canada’s efforts to combat international terrorism and ensure national security.
