New Delhi’s envoy to Ottawa, Sanjay Kumar Verma, emphasized the importance of human lives over political interests while paying tribute to the victims of the 1985 Air India ‘Kanishka’ bombing, cautioning against the dangers of supporting Khalistani extremists. The bombing, orchestrated by Khalistani Sikh extremists, resulted in the tragic loss of 307 lives on board the aircraft.
Verma’s remarks come amidst strained relations between New Delhi and Ottawa due to Canada’s alleged leniency towards anti-India Khalistani groups. India has urged global cooperation in combating terrorism and dismantling extremist networks to prevent further tragedies.
The recent homage paid by the House of Commons to a deceased Khalistani figure sparked controversy, leading to accusations and denials between the two nations. New Delhi reiterated its stance against political support for extremism and violence, urging for collective action to safeguard humanity from terrorist threats.
At a memorial ceremony marking the 39th anniversary of the tragic event, family members, officials, and community members gathered to honor the victims, highlighting the need for global unity against terrorism.
