Argentine President Javier Milei was honored in Hamburg, Germany, despite facing protests for his support of austerity measures. Milei, a right-wing populist, is scheduled to meet with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin, although a military honors reception was canceled due to a shortened program requested by the Argentine delegation. This follows a snub from Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, with Milei instead meeting with Isabel Diaz Ayuso of the Madrid region’s government.
Milei received an award from the Friedrich von Hayek Foundation, a think tank named after the economist who contributed to neoliberal economic theory. The award was praised by the group’s chairman and garnered support from figures like Hans-Georg Maassen and Beatrix von Storch. Milei aims to address Argentina’s economic challenges, advocating austerity measures and identifying as an “anarcho-capitalist.”
Despite planned protests against the event, Milei remains focused on his goals to tackle corruption, debt, and currency instability in Argentina. His visit to Europe will conclude in the Czech Republic.
