Iran Inaugurates Railway Link from Rasht to Caspian Port
Iran celebrates the completion of a 37-kilometer railway connecting Rasht to the Caspian Port, allowing sea-to-sea rail freight transport. The inauguration ceremony on June 20 will be attended by a special aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Azerbaijan’s deputy prime minister.
The project is a significant development for Iran, boosting its cargo transit capacities and trade connections between the Caucasus region, Caspian Sea states, central Asian nations, and those in the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean regions.
With an investment of over $100 million, the railway will facilitate direct freight transport from the Caspian Sea to the Persian Gulf, contributing to Iran’s goal of increasing transit revenues from regional and international trade corridors.
In recent years, Iran has focused on expanding its transport network to enhance its position as a key transit hub. The completion of the missing links on the International North-South Transport Corridor could potentially bring in up to $5 billion per year from cargo transit.
