Ukrainian law enforcement agencies suspect two residents of Kazakhstan in the assassination attempt on Kazakh opposition activist and journalist Aidos Sadykov in Kyiv. The suspects, Altai Zhakanbayev and Meiram Karatayev, arrived in Ukraine’s capital and stalked Sadykov, learning his schedule and details about his life. They attempted to shoot Sadykov in his car, causing him serious injury.
Aidos Sadykov and his wife Natalya Sadykova, founders of a critical YouTube channel, fled Kazakhstan in 2014 and have been vocal in their opposition to the Kazakh government. Sadykov’s activism has led to persecution and imprisonment in Kazakhstan, culminating in the recent assassination attempt in Ukraine.
