Ontario is reevaluating its home construction tallies after concerns were raised about undercounting, resulting in municipalities missing out on millions in provincial funding. Premier Doug Ford’s government aims to build 1.5 million homes by 2031, with 50 municipalities assigned annual housing targets and promised extra funding for meeting or exceeding them.
Discrepancies between Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) data and municipal counts have led to some municipalities losing out on funding. Oakville and Ajax were among those affected, with CMHC undercounting housing starts in these areas.
Municipalities are now advocating for a change in the eligibility metric for funding from housing starts to building permits issued, as external factors can delay construction even after a permit is secured. Mayor Marianne Meed Ward highlights the need for accurate data to ensure fair distribution of funds.
While some municipalities have received funding, concerns remain about the criteria and distribution. The government plans to redirect unused funds to a housing infrastructure fund, although implementation is still pending.
