Pakistan has called on the United Nations to launch a coordinated effort to retrieve weapons from terrorist groups like the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Ambassador Munir Akram addressed the UN Conference on Small Arms and Light Weapons, expressing concerns about terrorists acquiring advanced weapons. He urged for a joint campaign to recover these arms and investigate their origins.
The envoy emphasized the responsibility of UN member states in preventing the illicit trade of weapons, which fuels conflicts and terrorism globally. Akram also noted the challenges posed by evolving technologies like drones in combating weapon proliferation. He highlighted the importance of the UN Programme of Action and the International Tracing Instrument in addressing these issues.
Pakistan has been actively combating terrorism, particularly concerning the TTP’s activities based in Afghanistan. With rising terror incidents, Pakistan continues to seek international cooperation for regional security. The country saw a surge in violence in 2023, necessitating stronger counterterrorism efforts. Overall, Pakistan remains committed to addressing the illicit proliferation of weapons for global safety and security.
