Active transportation groups in Halifax are expressing frustration over a new redevelopment design for the Windsor Street Exchange project. The design, set to be presented to Halifax councillors, has received criticism for not prioritizing walking, rolling, cycling, and transit.
The groups, including More Than Buses, Walk ‘n Roll Halifax, and the Halifax Cycling Coalition, believe that the proposed design does not address the future needs of the city and will lead to increased traffic congestion and environmental concerns.
The new plan lacks dedicated bus lanes, sidewalks, and cycleways, making it challenging for residents to use alternative forms of transportation. Critics argue that the design is outdated and fails to consider the anticipated growth of Halifax’s population.
If approved, the redevelopment will include transit priority measures and improved active transportation connections. However, concerns remain about its long-term effectiveness and impact on traffic flow.
The project, with a projected cost of $103,865,000, is set to begin construction in 2025 pending approval from Halifax councillors.
