Tragic Climbing Expedition on Spantik Mountain in Pakistan
Tragedy struck on Spantik mountain in the Karakoram Range of northern Pakistan as Japanese climbers Ryuseki Hiraoka and Atsushi Taguchi went missing while attempting a summit. Sadly, one climber’s body was found, while a search continues for the other, according to Shigar district deputy commissioner Wali Ullah Falahi.
The search efforts were hindered by poor weather conditions, but high-altitude climbers and experts, along with Pakistan Army helicopters, remain dedicated to locating the missing climber. The duo, who were climbing without porters, had reached base camp on June 3 and were last seen on June 10 before fellow climbers raised the alarm.
Spantik, known as the Golden Peak, is a challenging but accessible mountain attracting climbers from around the world. Despite the risks, Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region remains a popular destination for adventurers during the summer climbing season from June to August.
