New Minimum Wage Bill to be Implemented with Strong Sanctions
The National Assembly is taking a firm stand to ensure that states, local governments, and the Organised Private Sector adhere to the newly approved minimum wage. The Senate has shared plans to include clear sanctions in the new bill to penalize defaulters, following President Bola Tinubu’s submission of the Wage Award Bill.
Labour unions have been demanding N250,000 as the minimum wage, while the government and the OPS proposed N62,000. State governors argued that they could manage N60,000 but not more. Despite the ongoing negotiations, Labour remains adamant about accepting anything less than N250,000.
The Senate spokesperson assured that the new bill would be stringent and enforced across all levels. He emphasized the importance of compliance and hinted at possible measures to ensure adherence to the new legislation. The House of Representatives is also ready to expedite the passage of the wage bill to benefit Nigerian workers.
Overall, the focus is on creating a conducive environment for businesses to thrive while ensuring fair wages for workers.
