Exploring Brazil’s Equatorial Margin: Petrobras CEO’s Regret and Vision
Petrobras’ CEO, Magda Chambriard, expressed regret for not exploring Brazil’s Equatorial Margin earlier, citing a delay of 10 years in seizing opportunities in the new “pre-salt” region. She criticized Ibama for slow authorizations, hindering oil exploration in the Equatorial Margin from Rio Grande do Norte to Amapá.
Chambriard highlighted the importance of environmentally responsible exploration, addressing concerns of environmentalists. She announced plans to present Petrobras’ commitment to safety, excellence in production, and environmental preservation to the National Energy Policy Council.
At the FII Priority Summit, Chambriard emphasized the potential benefits of exploring the Equatorial Margin for national growth. President Lula also echoed support for legal and environmentally conscious exploration in the region.
Chambriard views Equatorial Margin exploration as vital for national security and a strategic move amid the natural decline in pre-salt fields. Her vision is to leverage new opportunities while ensuring sustainable development for Brazil.
